The History of the Cleveland Clinic Fire Outbreak

Unfortunately, the Cleveland Clinic fraternity lost one of its founders, John Phillips, on 15th May 1929, during a fire outbreak. The disaster happened when x-ray films placed in the basement of the outpatient building exploded after being too close to an exposed light bulb. The nitro-cellulose x-ray film released poisonous gases, killing one hundred and twenty-three people, including 80 patients, visitors, and 43 employees. Ninety-two victims acquired either minor or major injuries.

It was examined that the victims’ bodies succumbed to death after inhaling the toxic poisoners’ vapor turned yellow and later green. This tragic disaster brought about the development and administration of safety regulations in hospitals in the United States. Special compartments were built to store and label hazardous materials like x-ray films. The City Manager’s commissioner investigated the fire-enforced gas masks in Cleveland’s fire and police department. Furthermore, a municipal ambulance service was established for transportation in case of emergencies.

A committee of 36 community leaders was formed to revive the Cleveland clinic. After five days, customer care services recommenced, and by 1941, the burnt building was completely renovated, and all debts were paid.
